This term in Hedgehog Class our topic is animals. We had a delivery of eggs in an incubator and got to watch the chicks hatch. The children were very excited to watch them change and to hold and stoke them. This was a wonderful first hand experience for the children and the perfect stimulus for writing. The children made a chick diary, writing about the changes and holding the chicks and what they felt like. The children made their own chicks from paper plates.
The PTFA very kindly gave us some caterpillars and the children have enjoyed looking at them with a magnifying glass and watching them grow. They were delighted to come in after the weekend to find they are now in their chrysalis phase. We are watching everyday waiting for the butterflies to emerge. This has helped the children to learn about the life cycle of a caterpillar.
The children have been learning to read phase 4 tricky words in phonics and learning to read them in sentences. They have also been learning to spell them accurately. We say they are tricky because they can’t sound them out following the normal rules we have been teaching them. The words are “said, have, like, so, do, some, come, there, little, one, were, out, what” and “when”.
We are looking forward to our trip to Finkley Down Farm and learning about farm animals.
Thank you for all your support this year.
