Welcome to Squirrel Class

We are very much looking forward to our Fairy tales topic in Squirrel Class next term.  This is always a popular one as a lot of the traditional tales we will be covering are already familiar to the children.  Then through these we can offer lots of enhancements and focus activities to move the children's learning on in lots of fun and exciting ways.

Each class has voted for their favourite fairy tales, which we then tallied up across all of the classes.  The top three are going to be the ones which we focus on over the term.  These are; The Gingerbread Man, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk.  Within these topics the children will have opportunities to create their own wanted posters, retell and write their own stories, make books, construct bridges and huge beanstalks, create maps, write speech bubbles, and make character masks and stick puppets.  We will still be continuing with our guided reading sessions twice a week, our daily phonics lessons and our weekly handwriting lessons.

World Book Day falls on the second week of the term which fits in nicely with our topic.  We will be doing lots of extra activities that week, thinking about our favourite books and dressing up as book characters.

In Maths over the term we will be doing lots of practical activities with objects, such as finding more and less, as well as halving sets of objects.  We will also be learning to add using a number line to count along.  Towards the end of the term the children will be learning about money during our Jack and the Beanstalk topic in order to buy some magic beans!  This will involve coin recognition and using language related to money.

In the last week we wil be able to enjoy lots of Easter activities, including making Easter cards, decorating eggs, cooking and taking part in an egg and spoon race!
